God of War: The Descendant

20th Chapter: Mia ischyrí pigí

Leaning against the door frame, Adia waited. The sun had just risen from its slumber and none of the guild members has arrived yet. She waited there watching the old man sign the bundle of stacked papers. All of which seemed to be from the council.

Bags had formed under Makarov’s eyes, making him look twice as old as the oldest fossils. One by one, the papers were signed fastly, until the last stack was reached. A sigh of death as he unclicked his pen and set it down.

“Finally,” The brunette walked past the scattered papers on the floor and took a seat in one of the chairs not occupied by paperwork. “Now tell me everything there is to know about the mission.”

Makarov stayed unmoving and he looked dead. After a few seconds’ silence, he mumbled, “Just give me a few minutes child..”

“A few more minutes and those brats will be here.”

He twitched and groaned. “O–Okay..” It came out muffled since his head was still glued to the table. He looked like a fish out of water.

“You have at least 30 minutes.” Adia crossed her legs and leaned back in the old wooden chair. He appeared in no condition to talk. His brain was probably fired from stress. Maybe that’s why he’s nocturnal.

Thrice, the old man’s head collided with the wooden table. Each time a bump formed. He gave up trying and just proceeded to talk with his head down. “You know, you could've come at another time.” He twisted his head so his mouth wasn’t blocked by the table. “You could still do that, the door’s open.”

The brunette cocked an eyebrow. “Then it’s okay if I tell them?”

       “Wait, what?”

“Those brats of yours have been curious. They wanted to know the reason. I kept my mouth shut because I wanted to confirm something first.”

Makarov absorbed everything, feeling relieved that she was rational enough to act accordingly. “It was incredibly stupid of me not to tell you before you even joined, but I didn't because I thought it would never cross your mind.”

Adia stared the slumped body down. “You were right. It never once crossed my mind. Until I had a conversation with that group. I became curious then, but because of a different reason.”

“I'm surprised you didn't ask me this beforehand,” He sighed “What do you want to know.”

“You said last night that all the guilds were uninformed. So it must mean it’s a decree given by the council.” She began, her tone icy, “I want to know why such a law was made and who were the people behind.”

There was a pause of silence and the old man turned his head so he was facing her. “You must surely remember what Wolfheim had offered you before in your trial.”

The brunette snorted, and shook her head, “Of course, how could I forget? He offered me the position of wizard saint. Most specifically, the eighth one.”

“And you refused,” He finished, “He gave two reasons. The first was to use the title as a cover for the underhanded missions, and the second was?” He waited for her to conclude but instead got a grunt.

       “Tch.”

“Exactly,” If he could snap his fingers, he would have already done it. But alas, he was drained. “The second reason applies to the intention behind making the edict. And also, for your sake.”

Confusion painted Adia’s face. “For my sake?”

A small, reminiscent smile curved Makarov’s mouth as he remembered. “The Polemos clan has always been regarded as a myth. Only a few people recognize the name.” He answered her questioning look calmly. “High officials of the council were the only people who knew the reason behind your imprisonment. They didn’t bother to inform the guilds because they couldn’t risk the information leaking.”

       “Leaked information? Why is that?”

“If word leaked out about this, then the inevitable will happen. Like Wolfheim had said before, the families of the deceased would protest and would file suits against you.”

Despite this, the brunette’s face remained calm. She broke eye contact by looking to her side. “The truth will come out eventually.”

The old man breathed deep and forced a hopeful smile. “The council is well aware of that fact. They–We would do everything we could to avoid that from happening. And, if ever, it still happened, it wouldn't transpire now during the crowd’s uproar. But instead in the future when it has somehow abated.”

Adia stared off into the forest through the window, assimilating the newfound information. She spoke after a while, “Why bother? It’s not like I’m of importance.”

Eyes widening, Makarov did his best to lift his head. “I believe you know the reason why Wolfheim wants you alive.. But,” He leaned against his propped up hand for support and looked caringly at her. “Child, I want to help you. I've known you since you were born. You're important to me.”

The brunette didn’t bother to look at him but glanced at him from the corner of her eye. “Why?” Her voice was hard, unwavering, “Why are you so bent up on me? You haven't even seen me since I was a child. You don't know how much I have changed…”

“Child, do you remember the first time you visited Fairy Tail?” He thought of that day, genuinely smiling at the memory, “I told you right? Once a family, always a family.”

She didn’t respond. She knew what the memory contained. But that was before she was betrayed. Clenching her fist, she looked back at him narrowing her eyes. “I was naïve then. Now, I’m different.”

       “Then tell me, what’s changed?”

Knock, knock, knock. The sound came, reverberating through the room, catching the pair’s attention. A white-haired woman in a pink dress made her way inside, but stopped once she saw the brunette.

“Oh, I am sorry to interrupt—“ She stopped midsentence when she saw her walk past. The sound of the door closing echoed and Mirajane looked questioningly at Makarov. “I'm really sorry to interrupt, Master.” She bowed her head.

The old man’s eyes focused on the door then trailed over the girl. “It’s okay. We we’re done talking anyway.” The girl slowly looked back up at him, “Now child, why are you here?” An unexpected giggle escaped her throat, and he raised both brows. “What?”

“Here’s more paper from the shops we owe money to.” Mirajane pulled out a stack from behind her back and Makarov turned pale as snow. His soul seemed to flow out his mouth.

With her hood on her head, she traveled through town and into a forest. While waiting for the division leader to move out, she decided to allay suspicion and kill time by honing her skills. It had been long since she had held a weapon. She picked up one of the knives she found laid in the street and began marking spots in certain areas on the surrounding trees. Once the targets were placed, she walked to the center of the clearing.

Adia closed her eyes and took a slow, deep breath. There were six targets. She had seven knives. When the wind blew, she threw one knife into the air. As it flew, the six remaining that were settled between her fingers darted into their awaiting target. Each one pierced the center, a direct hit. The knife came flying down and she caught it just before it changed trajectory. She opened her eyes.

A crunching sound to her right. She stared into its direction and flung the knife. She heard a small startled sound break the stillness. Knowing who it was, she sighed. “Come out.”

“Eh? How did you know I was here?” A small child wearing a cowboy hat appeared in the bush, “Ha ha! Before it was you who found me! Now it’s my turn!”

“Where are your parents?” The brunette eyed the child, it was sweating “How did you get here?”

“Um,” It placed its small finger on its chin, “Me and my parents were walking around town, then I saw you! While they were buying ice cream I ran and followed you!”

“Why would you do that?” Thinking back, she did feel something follow. But it was such a trivial thing that she ignored it.

“Because! I wanted to say thank you!”  The child clapped its hands together and tilted its head off to the side with its eyes closed. A smile lit up its face when it uncovered its shining white teeth. “I saw your training! You’re awesome!”

“I didn't do anything to you. Now leave.” In the distance, Adia could sense someone approach. In a second she fled, and hid in the woods. She concealed her presence and watched as two figures came into view. One was male and the other female. Must be the kid’s parents.

“But you said I should say ‘thank you’ to the person who helped me! And so I did!”

“But that doesn't mean you can just runoff like that.” The father scolded. He had short spiky hair and wore a western outfit. It was the cranky guy who’d given her the very welcome gift of a slap.

So she’s the girl from before. A busty woman with green hair picked the child up. The girl’s mother. “You saw her here?” She looked around a bit suspiciously. “Well, what did she look like again?”

“She was very beautiful mommy! And strong too! She had the Fairy mark!” The child had stars in its eyes as it dreamily pictured the brunette to itself.

“A Fairy Tail member huh? But there are many beautiful women in the guild.”

“I know! Like Lulu, and Erza and Mira~ but she’s different!”

Adia resumed spying. Until, she felt it.

An incredibly strong magic power. From the west. She looked in its direction and accidentally stepped over a dry leaf, catching the family’s attention. Before they could even see her, she quickly took off. She propelled forward like a wind to a sail.

Drawing near, she noticed the area was new. This was the only part of town she had yet to explore. Not only was the magic strong, but it had a mix of exclusive magic.

Anxiety took over her as her eyes finally caught sight of the source of magic. The man had his back turned to her. He was a powerful figure huddled in a high collared and tattered cloak that partly hid his face. His power was intimidating.

Lifting the hood onto her head, the brunette approached the man from behind. Her presence was well concealed since before she entered the town so it was impossible to sense her at all. This man was different. Estimated, he was the same caliber as the old man.

Odd place for someone like him to be going, He was in line at a food stall. But nevertheless, she kept her guard up. Adia waited for him to finish eating and when he was done, she followed close behind, this time not waiting.

Abruptly, the man stopped. Instead of going along the road, to where he was supposed to go, he turned a corner and allowed himself to be driven into one of the town’s blocked-off alleyways.

“How?” The brunette questioned firmly. “I was fully covered.” The man turned around and she narrowed her eyes.

“I don’t know, I just got a feeling,” He shrugged. It was his turn to narrow his eyes. “What do you want?” His eyes scanned her figure and stopped at her neck. “Another beautiful recruit of the guild eh? Tell me, what’s your name?” A lopsided grin fell on his lips.

“You lowered your defenses all because you saw the mark.” Adia pointed out, “I’m not going to tell you mine unless you tell me yours.”

“Ah, a perceptive one.” The smile never left his face, he didn’t look intimidated. “If I show you my guild mark, would you trust me now? Wipe that scowl off your face and loosen up a bit!” He gave a hearty laugh. The brunette only stared at him. He coughed awkwardly. “You look really uptight.. It was a joke, jeez.”

Adia intently watched his movements, calculating his every move. The man noticed and cleared his throat. “Look, if you’re that cautious, I’ll tell you my name. Does that sound right?”

“If you think that I’m going to let my guard down because of that, you’re wrong.”

“Fine, fine.” He sighed, hopeless, “My name’s Gildarts. I’m a mage of Fairy Tail. And you are?”
